How it is calculated

Cost per 100 miles = consumption in l/100 km × price per litre × 1.609344 (km per mile). Cost per month = miles per month × 1.609344 ÷ 100 × consumption × price. Cost per year = cost per month × 12.

Range on a full tank = tank size in litres ÷ consumption × 100 km, divided by 1.609344 for miles. UK mpg (imperial gallons) is converted with l/100 km = 282.48 ÷ mpg.

Worked example

A car doing 45 mpg (6.3 l/100 km) with fuel at 145.9p a litre: 100 miles cost £14.74. Driving 600 miles a month costs £88.44, or £1,061.24 a year. A 50 litre tank takes you about 495 miles.

Real-world consumption depends on speed, load and weather and is usually higher than the official figure.
